Why is this required?

A VIN verification is required in the state of Maine by the Bureau of Motor Vehicles whenever vehicles and trailers of a certain age are registered for the first time. Vehicle owners who wish to title a salvage car must also request a VIN inspection.The purpose is to deter the illegal selling or refurbishing of stolen cars or auto parts.
