The Patrol Division is the largest and most dynamic unit of the Police Department, consisting of 8 full-time uniformed officers assigned exclusively to patrol the Town of Rumford in marked police cruisers, answering calls for service ranging from noise complaints to violent crimes and everything in between and enforcing traffic laws. The town is divided into two zones and a minimum of 2 uniformed officers are on duty 24/7 to provide police services. During peak times, special details, or at the discretion of the Chief of Police, additional officers will be assigned support the Patrol Division to help answer calls or conduct special patrol functions.
The Criminal Investigations Division consists of three full-time, specially trained officers assigned exclusively to conduct and manage complex and serious felony-level criminal investigations. Crimes commonly handled by this Division are felony drug trafficking, child abuse, sex crimes, assaults with deadly weapons, felony property crimes, fraud and elder abuse. All Rumford Police Detectives have special deputization with neighboring Oxford and Androscoggin County Sheriff's Offices as well as special federal deputization with the FBI's Southern Maine Gang Task Force to more efficiently and effectively combat criminal activity that affects Rumford. Two Detectives are stationed at Police Headquarters and a third (when assigned) works out of a multi-jurisdictional task force at the discretion of the Chief of Police.
Our K9 Team consists of a highly-trained narcotics detection dog named "Niko" and his handler Patrolman Lawrence Briggs. The K9 Team is also qualified for article and people searches. Training is vigorous and ongoing to ensure consistency, accuracy and a high success rate. The K9 Team is considered top-notch in narcotics and article detection and is credited for detecting and seizing hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of dangerous drugs! The K9 Team is so successful and often requested by other departments that the Team has been credentialed as special deputies for the Oxford and Androscoggin County Sheriff's Offices as well as for the FBI's Southern Maine Gang Task Force.
Our School Resource Officer (SRO) Division consists of one full-time officer dedicated to all elementary, middle and high schools within the greater Rumford-Mexico area (RSU #10). The SRO is specially trained to interact with kids and provide important mentor-relationships to better prepare kids for when they leave school and enter adulthood. The SRO is also the first line of defense with specialized training, skills, equipment and experience to handle any school threat ranging from bullying to active shooter incidents.The SRO is deeply immersed in a wide-range of school and community-betterment activities including, but not limited to:
The Department's commanding officer is Chief Tony Milligan. The second-in-command is Captain Daniel Garbarini. The glue that holds the entire department together is Administrative Assistant Tamera Richard. She is the "face" of Rumford PD and is the person who will likely greet you on the telephone or at the service window at police headquarters.
